How to Treat Diarrhea in Children with Autism
Are you looking for ways to safely and naturally treat your autistic child who has diarrhea? Then read these tips and tricks that have worked great for others in your situation.
The very first way to treat diarrhea in a child with autism is to find the source. Treating it is one thing, but preventing it can go a long ways too. If you suspect that your child has something else going on besides autism related issues, then please seek a physician for immediate care.
Common causes of diarrhea can be food allergies including but not limited to, lactose in milk, casein in milk, wheat gluten, soy, too many vitamins, high fat diets, fast foods, norovirus, stomach flu, h1n1 flu, certain medications, nervousness, certain genetic disorders, rett syndrome, low vitamin A, and many other causes known and unknown.
If you suspect that your child suffers from any of the above mentioned causes of diarrhea, then seek medical help or proper medical advice immediately.
One of the most common side effects of diarrhea in any person regardless of the cause is going to be the threat of dehydration. From there, the individual may suffer from depletion or low levels of electrolytes, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients if the condition lasts for more than a few episodes. Replenishing these vital resources will be key to recovery.
Stay well hydrated and nutrient fed while the diarrhea lasts. Powerade, Gatorade, Pedialyte or other electrolyte drinks will be very important during diarrhea spells. Never mind the high fructose corn syrup and dyes that may be in some of these drinks. The electrolytes will far out-benefit the other ingredients during a diarrhea spell.
Seizures and muscle cramping can be very real in a dehydrated situation; especially in people with Autism.
A trick that I have learned myself in our daughter who is diagnosed with Rett Syndrome and low vitamin A deficiency is to freshly juice carrots with celery and an apple for a sweetener. A 50/50 blend of carrots and celery work great and the added apple makes it taste great too. If you don’t have a juicer, yet have issues with diarrhea often, I highly recommend investing in one. Spend the money on a good juicer too. The cheaper ones can cost you more money in wasted juice if you get the wrong one.
Here is a cheap one:

VillaWare Juice ExtractorDiarrhea was an issue in our Daughter for almost 2 years until we did the carrot/celery thing. The very first time we gave her some of this juice, she immediately had no bowel movement for the first 2 days as her body miraculously formed a solid stool. At first, we gave her 8 ounces per day. Then we whittled it down to just 4 ounces after a few weeks and then 3,2,1 and after 3 months, something unexpected happened; she no longer needed it and her body is now healed even today.
Since we cured her of the chronic diarrhea, she screams far less, is more aware of her surroundings, is much more engaging, and is much more healthy looking and feeling. She just turned 4 years old and is acting much more her age now.
I am sure there are other ways to treat and even possibly cure diarrhea than this, and I would love to hear you comments below. But for us, the carrot/celery juice worked like a charm and left us with a diarrhea-free child for the first time in 2 years. No probiotics, no over-the-counter meds, no prescriptions, just good ole’ fashioned fresh juice made from real vegetables and an apple.
I can’t guarantee this will work the same for your child as it did with ours, but I can only ask that you try it if you are out of options. And if it is going to work, you will see the results immediately as we did.
Thanks for reading this and God Bless you and your family.
